Saxenda
Saxenda is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It’s an injectable medication that’s FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or who are overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity.
Liraglutide works by mimicking the action of a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps regulate appetite, food intake, and blood sugar levels. When injected, Saxenda can help reduce feelings of hunger and increase feelings of fullness, leading to a decrease in calorie intake and potential weight loss.
It’s typically used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Saxenda is usually started at a low dose and gradually increased to minimize side effects, which can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and low blood sugar levels (especially in people with type 2 diabetes).
As with any medication, Saxenda should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider, and its benefits and risks should be carefully considered based on individual health status and weight loss goals. Regular monitoring and follow-up with a healthcare provider are important to assess progress, adjust dosage if needed, and address any concerns or side effects.
