Pain behind knee
Pain behind the knee can stem from various sources, ranging from minor injuries to underlying medical conditions. One common cause is overuse or strain, particularly in athletes or individuals who engage in repetitive activities that put stress on the knee joint. Such activities can lead to inflammation of the tendons or muscles behind the knee, resulting in discomfort and stiffness. Additionally, conditions like tendonitis, where the tendons become inflamed due to overuse or injury, can cause pain behind the knee. In some cases, a Baker’s cyst, a fluid-filled swelling that develops at the back of the knee joint, can also be a source of pain. Furthermore, structural issues such as a meniscus tear or ligament sprain can cause pain behind the knee, often resulting from sudden twisting or hyperextension movements. Less commonly, conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or popliteal artery entrapment syndrome can manifest as pain behind the knee and require medical attention. Identifying the underlying cause of pain behind the knee is essential for implementing appropriate treatment and preventive measures to alleviate discomfort and promote recovery.
